Seawolves earn split in first YSCC action at NHTI

CONCORD, N.H.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team split in its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action at NHTI on Saturday, Apr. 13.

Game 1: W, 8-4 (8 innings)

SMCC turned the scoreboard over early with a 2-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to a double from first-year Brady Wintle (Gorham, Maine) and a sacrifice fly from rookie John Davis (Newport, Maine). NHTI responded in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-2 lead, but the Seawolves rallied back in the seventh and eighth innings.

First-year Quinn Dillon (Gorham, Maine) played a crucial role in the late-game comeback, with a double in the seventh inning that brought in two runs and a single in the eighth that accounted for two more RBIs. Sophomore Ryan Thurber (South Portland, Maine) and junior Liam Cooledge (Westbrook, Maine) also contributed timely knocks in extra innings.

First-year Jason Libby (Bangor, Maine) made the start for SMCC and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on two hits with seven strikeouts. First-year Bennett Smith (Falmouth, Maine) came in relief and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to secure the win.

Game 2: L, 10-6

The game saw NHTI take an early lead in the second inning, scoring five runs to upstage SMCC's first inning run. The Seawolves added runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings, but ultimately fell short.

Dillon put together another strong performance at the plate with four hits, and first-year Brady O'Lone (Fort Myers, Fl.) contributed two RBIs.

SMCC starter Thomas Knott (Winterport, Maine) was taxed the loss after surrendering eight runs spanning four innings of work.

The Seawolves move to 15-8 overall, 1-1 YSCC; NHTI sits at 9-13, 1-3 YSCC.

The teams will turn around to meet again on Sunday, Apr. 14 at SMCC for the rubber game of the season series. First-pitch in South Portland is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
