SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team bounced back to the win column with a 75-64 result over Villa Maria College in non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 2.
The first half saw a closely contested battle. Villa Maria outscored the Seawolves by a three-point margin, and despite shooting 0-10 from beyond the arc, the home team did well to outrebound the opposition 24-18 to keep the game within reach and set the stage for an exciting second half.
The Seawolves came out determined in the second half, stringing together a 13-2 run to build a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) totaled a team-high 16 points, providing crucial assists to his teamates down the stretch. First-year forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) notched a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. His dominant presence in the paint was coupled with Cayman Warburton's (Worcester, Mass.) seven rebounds and 12 points.
SMCC forced the opposition into a poor shot selection and a 25.8 field goal percentage. The home team converted 41.8 percent of its attempts.
Villa's Taron Benton topped all scorers with 21 points and added 12 rebounds.
SMCC starts a new win streak at 6-3 overall; Villa Maria slips to 5-5 thus far.
The Seawolves return to conference scheduling when they travel to Great Bay Community College on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Tip-off in Portsmouth, N.H. is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
