SMCC Suffers Narrow Defeats In Warwick

WARWICK, R.I.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team was defeated by the Knights of the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) in both games of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 15.

Game 1: L, 8-6

Junior Charlie Hallack (Augusta, Maine) made his second start of the season on the bump for the SeaWolves in the first of the two-game slate. The right-hander allowed eight runs over five innings of work.

CCRI struck first with two runs in the first and one in the second frame before SMCC took the lead in the top-half of the third inning posting four runs on consecutive RBI singles.

The Knights answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning and tacked on one more in the fourth to jump ahead 8-4. The SeaWolves looked able for a comeback when they pushed two across in the top-half of the seventh, but that was all they would manufacture against CCRI's Matt Kennedy who notched the 8-6 save.

Knights' Steve Noti earned the victory pitching five strong, allowing just two earned runs; Hallack was taxed with the loss.

Sophomore Edgar Montan (Santiago, Dominican Republic) was a perfect 3-3 from the dish as sophomore Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine) also collected two hits and two runs scored.

Game 2: L, 2-1

Herrin made his third start of the year in the doubleheader finale and did not disappoint. The sophomore struck out seven batters and allowed just two earned runs over six complete innings. Herrin caught his counterpart, Dave Simmons, on a performance just a little more impressive.

SMCC gave up the first run of the game playing the infield back on a bases loaded groundball to score the runner from third.

With two outs in the fifth inning, the SeaWolves evened the score when sophomore Nathaniel Cyr (Freeport, Maine) reached on an error by the third baseman that scored sophomore Max Salevsky (Hollis, Maine) from third.

With runs being something of a premium in this game, Herrin took the Knights into the bottom of the seventh looking to force extras. CCRI put the lead-off batter on and he would eventually come around to score in walk-off fashion on a double to right field to win 2-1.

Knights' Shane Kittila was credited with the win as Herrin suffered his second loss of the season.

SMCC falls to 5-11-1 overall as CCRI improves to 20-3.

The SeaWolves will do battle with Massasoit Community College on Monday, April 17 in Brockton, Mass. for another afternoon double dip beginning at 1 p.m.
