Baseball Blasts 12 Runs To Begin YSCC Slate

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team defeated the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in convincing fashion 12-2 in eight innings on Thursday, April 12.

First-year Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) made his eighth appearance of the season in an eight-inning two-run performance to improve on his 4.70 earned run average. The right-hander cruised to his fourth win of his rookie campaign and in control allowing no walks and striking out seven.

The SeaWolves offense came alive in the second inning when first-year Devin Butler (Standish, Maine) drove in two on a single to left field. Later in the third, the home team tacked on two more runs when first-year Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) stole home to score the fifth run of the game.

The Mustangs used four hits to score a pair in the fifth inning, but the SeaWolves strung together a big inning in the seventh highlighted with RBI's delivered by junior Carter Chabot (Lewiston, Maine), sophomore Cody Bryant(Somersworth, N.H.), and again by Butler.

SMCC went up by 10 runs to end the game early with two outs in the eighth and to secure its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and seventeenth win of the season.
