Adams’ Monster Day Aids Baseball In Sweep of Massasoit

BROCKTON, Mass.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team combined for 32 runs to sweep the Warriors of Massasoit Community College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 7.

Game 1: W, 15-4 (5 innings) | BOX

The SeaWolves trailed 4-0 in the early goings before getting one back in the second. The high-powered offense came to the rescue with its biggest inning of the day—10 runs in the third to take a commanding 11-4 advantage. For safe measure, SMCC added to its totals with four more spread across the final two innings to finish the game in five.

Senior captain Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine) hit for perfection going 3-3 with two homers, a walk, four runs and four RBIs—the slugger even made it happen on the base paths with two stolen bases. Sophomore captain Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) also logged three hits in three at-bats to feature a double and two runs scored.

First-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.) got the nod for his seventh start of the season to record his fifth career win. The righty struck out 10 batters in a complete-game outing to bring his season total to 48 and took credit for all four runs to sport a 2.43 season ERA.

Massasoit's Richie Wood suffered the loss.

Game 2: W, 17-15 | BOX

Again, the SeaWolves found themselves down early 6-1 after the first inning. Both teams matched with three runs in the second but SMCC used its hacks in the third to tie the ball game at 9-9. Fast forward to the top half of the seventh and the SeaWolves trail 15-10. With plenty of work ahead, the boys from South Portland rose to the occasion and scored seven to take their first lead of the game.

Sophomore captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) came in to shut the door and retire the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh to secure the team's twentieth win of the season.

First-year captain Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) produced a season-high six runs in five trips to the plate. Adams came up with another three RBIs in game two to include the timely go-ahead knock in the seventh.

Coach Dave Walsh pieced his pitching together with a four-man crew that featured starter and first-year Alexander Schepis (Waterboro, Maine), junior Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.), first-year Derek Foss (Raymond, Maine), and Francoeur—Foss credited the win and Massasoit's Dylan Edes the loss.

Both teams finished with 14 hits, combining for 32 runs.

In a post-game interview, Walsh reflected, "It's important that we not put ourselves in a hole late in games, but recently we've made a habit of swinging our way out of it. Like I've said before, this group is gritty—no deficit is permanent."

SMCC wins its third consecutive and jumps to 20-5 overall.

The SeaWolves get back to Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play Tuesday, Apr. 9 when they host the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College for a single nine. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. LIVE STATS.
