Francoeur Throws No-No, SeaWolves Take Down Ravens

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team breezes by the Ravens from Carleton University (Canada) 10-0 in a non-conference contest at Graves Athletic Field on Monday, Apr. 29.

Sophomore captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) was superb in his eighth start of the year getting his fifth win by way of a no-hitter. The right-hander added to his totals with four strikeouts and lowered his ERA to a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA)-best 1.36. He allowed just four base runners on three walks and a hit batsman.

First-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.) provided instant offense in his first at-bat blasting a two-run shot to left center to score first-year captain Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine). Two innings later, the SeaWolves used three hits to extend their lead to 4-0 before scoring four more runs in the bottom half of the fourth highlighted by another two-run home run—this time courtesy of first-year slugger Junior Nunez (Boston, Mass.).

With one out and two on in the seventh, senior Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, Maine) connected with a fastball to the alley in right-center to score both and enforce the 10-run rule—his 18th and 19th RBIs of the season.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Dave Walsh commented, "Francoeur threw an absolute gem today, pitching to the ground ball and allowing our defense to make the plays—Stauber called a great game behind the plate. This lineup can produce runs in different ways, today we did it with the long ball. We look forward to playing at a high level with two more this week before the conference championships on Saturday."

SMCC moves to 25-7 overall and remains 5-1 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play.

On deck are two singles with the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Tuesday, Apr. 30 and Wednesday, May 1. Game times are slated for 3:30 p.m. LIVE STATS. Stay tuned using the SMCC Athletics Twitter account for weather updates.
