Walsh Earns 30th Career win, SeaWolves Win YSCC Fall Championship

AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball program finished its countable fall ball slate with a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) invitational championship defeating the host Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 15-0 on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Sophomore Nicholas Rinaldi (Tampa, Fl.) made his second start of his rookie campaign to throw a one-hit complete game shutout. The right-hander recorded his second career win; his counterpart William Bean was taxed the loss.

The SeaWolves offense put two runs on the Mustang starter in the first and seven more in the second—featuring a three-run homerun off the bat of first-year Joshua Paisley (Portland, Maine). SMCC continued its scoring streak in the third pushing six runs across on five hits.

First-year Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) finished his day with three RBIs and a stand-up triple. First-year Jackson Bowlen (Rochester, N.H.) had himself a 2-hit, 2-RBI game highlighted by a first-inning double. First-year Alexander Miller (Brandon, Fl.) crossed home three times and connected for a triple, and junior captain Colby Gunter (Nashua, N.H.) went a perfect 2-2 from the dish, adding a walk and a run.

Spanning 12 games this fall, SMCC has scored 114 runs, logged a .334 team batting average, and a .451 on-base percentage.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Dave Walsh reflected, "We pulled out all the stops today, a perfect way to go into the break. Rinaldi pitched his heart out and the offense showed why we can compete in any ballgame."

With the result, Coach Walsh gets his 30th win (30-6 overall) and the SeaWolves carry an 11-1 record into the 2020 spring season. The Mustangs conclude its countable fall schedule at 4-8 overall.

SMCC will conclude its fall with a 9-inning exhibition at Northern Essex Community College (NJCAA) on Wednesday, Oct. 9. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Haverhill, Mass.
