SMCC uses balanced attack to down UMA

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team dished out 23 assists and scored 32 points off of turnovers on its way to a 89-71 win over seventh seeded University of Maine at Augusta. Eleven different players lit up the score board, giving head coach Matt Richard's squad 33 points off the bench.

The Seawolves will face St. Joseph College of Vermont, who upset NHTI later in the evening, Saturday night at 6:00 pm.

SMCC was led by Jose Nouchanthavong, who scored 25 points, going nine for 16 from the floor, including five triples on the night. Nouchanthavong also came up with six of the Seawolves' 20 steals. Teammate Tong Akot was the only other player in double figures, scoring 18 points while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.

Sophomore Keith Chesley led the Moose with 25 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor. At one point in the second half, Chesley knocked down three triples in a row, but head coach Jim Ford's team couldn't contain the Seawolves defensively long enough to make a run.

Tevon Erwin scored 21 points and grabbed six steals for UMA, while teammate Brandon Rogers scored ten points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
