Martin and Richards Achieve Career Milestones In Win At Machias

MACHIAS, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team completed the season sweep over the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) 66-58 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action on the road Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Four of SMCC's five starters dropped double-digits led by senior captain Ryan Cloutier's (Pelham, N.H.) 16 points and three assists spanning 37 minutes on the floor. Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) became the 20th player in men's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point total on a made layup in the second half, part of his 14 on the afternoon.

In a game that featured 11 lead changes and six ties, SMCC found ahead by two at the 2:40 mark. Cloutier converted on a make around the hoop and junior captain Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) got a big put-back to go to extend the lead by six with under a minute remaining. Knocking down two more free-throws in combination with a Cloutier dunk sealed the 300th win of Head Coach Matt Richards' career at SMCC.

The SeaWolves connected for 62.6 percent in the second half and benefited from 13 points off the bench.

UMM's Dante Ramos led his team with 16 points on 6-14 shooting; center Trey Thompson recorded a double-double with 13 and 15.

Associate Head Coach AJ Burton commented, "It's always a grind on the road, especially the conference game at Machias. It was a great test for our guys after coming off a big win over the weekend. We battled through adversity and came out with another YSCC victory."

Winners of seven straight, SMCC climbs to 17-3 overall and 12-1 YSCC. Machias falls back to .500 at 6-6 in conference play.

The action continues when the SeaWolves play host to the #4-ranked United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Lynx from NHTI on Thursday, Jan. 31. The men will get the early game of the doubleheader, tipping at 6 p.m. WATCH.
