SeaWolves Dismantle #4-USCAA Lynx In South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team took revenge on the #4-ranked United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Lynx from NHTI 94-79 in part two of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) season series Thursday, Jan. 31.

Coming in, NHTI ranked first among all USCAA Div. 2 teams in points-per-game averaging 97.0; conversely SMCC ranked first in points-allowed-average at 61.3.

There were no lead changes or ties in this one. Junior captain Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) opened scoring for the home team, dropping six of SMCC's first eight points in the contest. The SeaWolves quickly climbed ahead 24-7 in the first seven minutes and never looked back.

SMCC went on to outscore NHTI by a 20-point spread in the first half and limited the Lynx to their second lowest point total of the season. The SeaWolves converted on 50 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from three-point land.

Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) led all scorers with 26 points on 11-16 shooting. The 6-foot, 5-inch forward recorded his twelfth double-double of the season adding 15 rebounds and six assists to an impressive stat line. Senior captain Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) got his regular 21 points and sophomore Gregory Trinidad (Lawrence, Mass.) drained four threes, also contributing eight rebounds and seven assists.

NHTI's J'Quavious Thurmond led his team with 22 points playing all 40 minutes. CJ Adams totaled 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

With the result, the all-time series now stands at 56-56.

SMCC wins its eighth straight and improves to 18-3 overall, 13-1 in league action. NHTI breaks a seven-game win streak and dips to 20-4 overall, 11-2 YSCC.

Next, the SeaWolves travel to the Naval Academy Preparatory School to play a non-conference game on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip-off in Newport, R.I. is scheduled for 3 p.m.
