SeaWolves Roar Past Mustangs, Remain Atop YSCC Standings

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team completed the season sweep of the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in the always anticipated Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rivalry on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

The SeaWolves began the contest on an 8-0 run, getting a jump start from junior captain Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) knocking down six in that stretch. The home team went ahead by as much as 16 in the first half compliments of Kavutse's 13 total points and two blocks in the first 20 minutes of action.

Senior captain Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) carried the load in the second half with 16 of his total 18 points on the evening. Senior captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) also contributed a strong half of basketball with a near double-double at eight points and 11 rebounds to help his team again outscore the Mustangs, this time by six.

SMCC scored on the first trip down the floor and never surrendered its lead. Now winning nine of their previous 10, the SeaWolves capitalized on 22 points off turnovers and 10-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Jacobee Burpee (Manchester, N.H.) ended with eight points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

CMCC's Mark McDonald and Rodney Theodore both netted 11 while Josh Chery tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

SMCC climbs to 14-1 in conference play, 19-4 overall. CMCC ranks fourth in the YSCC standings at 9-5, 15-7 overall.

Next, the SeaWolves pay a visit to Vermont Technical College on Saturday, Feb. 9. With a victory over the Knights, SMCC will be conference regular season champions. Tip-off in Randolph is set for 3 p.m. WATCH.
