All Contribute In Team Win At USCAA National Tournament

UNIONTOWN, Penn.—The #4-seeded Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team concluded its 2018-19 season with a 93-76 rout over the #7 Nittany Lions from Penn State University of Mont Alto in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament consolation round on Monday, Mar. 4.

SMCC landed 11 players in the scoresheet, getting 34 points from its bench. The SeaWolves converted on 50 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from long-range. A lopsided affair from the tip, SMCC strung together a 20-6 run to begin the contest and carried a 26-point advantage into the half.

Mont Alto crept back in to cut its deficit to 11 late in the second half, but the SMCC starters again created separation with an 8-0 run to confirm a 1-1 showing in Uniontown.

Four eclipsed double digit point totals led by senior captain Ryan Cloutier's (Pelham, N.H.) 18. Captains Atencio Martin (Kittery, Maine) and Anderson Kavutse (Westbrook, Maine) made the most out of their final game combining for 28 points. First-year DeSean Cromwell (Biddeford, Maine) splashed two three-pointers to contribute 11 points on 4-7 shooting.

Mont Alto's Quintyn Flemister and Jalen Smith combined for 46 of the team's 76 total points. The big man John Teague made quick work of a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes on the floor.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Matt Richards commented, "As the 2018-19 SeaWolves men's basketball season comes to a close, I will miss this group beyond words can describe. The record book will show regular season YSCC co-champions and a USCAA National Tournament appearance, however this team will be remembered by me for the special bond we had and the relationships we created with each other."
