SeaWolves Grab First YSCC Win

SeaWolves Grab First YSCC Win

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team earned its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) win edging the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

It was back-and-forth action for the first 77 minutes until sophomore Hanssen Casey (Eliot, Maine) picked up a loose ball in the box and blasted it side netting past Mustang keeper Dalton Wing to break the lock. The SeaWolves doubled their lead less than two minutes later on ball that found the back of the net off the head of first-year Syohga Cusumano (Okinawa, Japan).

CMCC's Kenneth Ball made things interesting when he scored with four minutes remaining in regulation, but it was all too little too late as the SMCC defense withstood any late Mustang momentum.

First-year Camden Labrecque (Saco, Maine) tallied seven saves to improve on his .862 season save percentage.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Brian Dougher reflected, "Every conference win is big, but this one put us back on track. Our defense hung tough and we were patient in the attack. Hats off to a talented CM squad."

SMCC improves to 2-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 YSCC; the Mustangs slip to .500 at 2-2-0 overall.

The SeaWolves return to conference action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they play host to the Bobcats from Paul Smith's College at Wainwright Recreational Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. LIVE STATS: https://www.gosmccseawolves.com/sports/msoc/2018-19/boxscores/20180915_ft4q.xml
