Men’s Soccer Keeps Pace With Third YSCC Victory

AMHERST, Mass.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's soccer team defeated Hampshire College 3-1 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match Saturday, Sept. 22.

The SeaWolves wasted no time jumping on the board at the 12:00 mark courtesy of first-year Syohga Cusumano(Okinawa, Japan) for his second cap of the season. It was sophomore Hanssen Casey (Eliot, Maine) in the 28thminute, unassisted, followed by first-year Muhammad Al Saker (Biddeford, Maine) seven minutes later.

SMCC finished the half ahead 3-0, ready to defend for the next 45 minutes. Hampshire's Jack Conroy connected to put a wrinkle in the SeaWolves' hopes for a shutout and cut the home team's deficit to 3-1. That's the way it ended as SMCC improved to 4-1-2 overall, 3-0-2 in conference action. Hampshire stoops to 0-3 overall.

First-year Camden Labrecque (Saco, Maine) notched eight saves, to his counterpart's 11. Labrecque ranks a YSCC-second in saves (49) and goals-against average (0.81).

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Brian Dougher reflected, "Today, we were ready to play from the first whistle. It was important we finished with opportunities in the attacking third—that was the missing piece. We are ready to peak offensively moving forward."

The SeaWolves get back to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in a non-conference match at Bridgton Academy. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
