Softball Clobbers UNE-Club 18-3 In Home Opener

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) softball team picked up its first win of the spring in a lopsided affair 18-3 against the club team from the University of New England in non-conference action Wednesday, Apr. 3.

In her second start of the spring, sophomore captain Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) took the circle to earn the complete-game victory. In five innings of work, the right-hander allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out four. She also got it done at the plate, landing four singles in five plate appearances.

Martin, sophomore Morgan Boyle (Portland, Maine) and junior Kalhi Philibotte (Hooksett, N.H.) finished with three RBIs each—Philibotte smacking two doubles. First-year Jordan Boucher (Berwick, Maine) scored three runs in three at-bats for the home team, adding a walk and two RBIs.

The Lady Wolves scored in each of the four frames they needed to win by the eight-run rule after five innings. SMCC turned the lineup over more than once in the bottom half of the second to post its biggest inning of the game—10 runs on six hits and one error.

UNE's Emily Tomas suffered the loss.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Ray Magnant reflected, "Everyone contributed in a true team win today. We swung the bats well and minimized some damage in the field by playing headsie defense. We're ready to ride this momentum into the beginning of conference play next week."

The SeaWolves start a new win streak and climb to 4-5 overall.

This series will resume Sunday, Apr. 7 when SMCC hosts UNE-club for a twinbill beginning at 9 a.m. LIVE STATS.
