Lady SeaWolves Sail To Fifth YSCC Win

MACHIAS, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team sailed to a 21-point Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) victory on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the University of Maine at Machias, 83-62.

The Lady SeaWolves didn't waste any time in finding their groove offensively, beginning the game red hot on a 15-2 run and outscoring the Clippers 29-9 in the first quarter.

Machias outscored SMCC in both the second and third quarters to pull within nine points with 17 minutes remaining in the game. Co-captains Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) and Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) combined for 14 of the SeaWolves' 20 points in on 5-9 shooting in the third quarter.

SMCC took its largest lead of the afternoon near the three minute mark in the fourth quarter to capture its fifth conference win this season. The SeaWolves capitalized on points off turnovers with 33, forcing the opposition into 31 giveaways. Although the Clippers were slightly better shooting the basketball, SMCC created more opportunities assisting on 23 of its 30 makes.

Farquharson led all scorers with a season-high 24 in 29 minutes of work. First-year point guard Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) contributed 18 points followed by Ruth with 16.

Machias' Caitlyn Lyons (Lubec, Maine) led her team with 20 points and eight rebounds.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron stated, "Away games where everyone gets minutes and everyone contributes are always fun and successful—with every game, our first-years get more and more conformable and the leadership from our returners grows stronger. We are a young team that continues to improve every day and we're looking forward to finishing out the semester strong!"
