Late 13-0 Run Boosts SeaWolves Over Knights

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team completed an exciting come-from-behind win over the Knights from the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) 78-65 to open the new year at The HUB on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The Knights held a slight 56-55 advantage after three quarters of action and both teams would trade baskets through the first six and a half minutes of the fourth. CCRI's Auviance Lindo buried a three to even the score at 65-65 with 3:33 remaining— these the last points the SMCC defense would allow.

First-year Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) banked in a lay-up to put the home team up three and in the next trip sophomore co-captain Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) swished a three, the dagger to go up six with under a minute remaining. The Seawolves finished the game on a 13-0 run, getting to the line 10 times in the final three minutes to earn their first victory of 2018.

Brett put together another dominant performance with 21 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. First-year guard Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) controlled the pace in her 31 minutes finishing with 17 points on 6-9 from the field— getting to the line 12 times. Ruth connected for three three-pointers and 15 points, grabbing a season high five rebounds.

CCRI's Nia Mims led her squad with 15 points in 32 minutes on the floor.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected, "I was extremely happy with the team's focus for the entire 40 minutes. Sometimes its a slow start out of the break, but every player today was ready to go. I was proud of their class and sportsmanship down the stretch!"

SMCC improves to 10-5 overall and gets back in the win column after a two-game skid; CCRI slips to 10-7 on the season. These teams will meet again on Sunday, Jan. 21, this time in Warwick, R.I.

The Lady SeaWolves continue their five-game home stand and get back to conference play with the University of Maine at Machias on Wednesday, Jan. 10. SMCC will go for the season sweep defeating Machias 83-62 on the road earlier this season. WATCH LIVE on SeaWolves TV.
