Lady Wolves Stun Moose In Pivotal YSCC Victory

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team defeated the #2 nationally ranked Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta in a come-from-behind thriller at The HUB on Wednesday evening, Jan. 24.

This a much anticipated Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match up, did not disappoint. The Moose dominated the first half shooting 56 percent (14-25) on their way to a nine-point advantage going into the locker room.

The SeaWolves chipped away with a 19-point third quarter, first-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) and captain Jordan Farquharson (Ryegate, Vt.) combing for 13, to cut their deficit to five, 50-45.

UMA was up by as much as six with 3:17 left in regulation before sophomore Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) buried yet another timely three-pointer to make it a two-point game. With 30 seconds remaining, SMCC took its first lead since the first quarter on a layup by Farquharson to make it 60-59.

First-year Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) knocked down 5-6 free-throws to put it out of reach for the Moose and to solidify a pivotal conference victory.

The SeaWolves shot just 17.6 percent from three-point territory compared to UMA's 44.4 percent, however controlled the key with 32 points inside the paint. SMCC capitalized on 24 points off turnovers, forcing the Moose into 19 miscues.

Both Ramirez and Brett finished with 18 points—Brett with another double-double adding 14 boards. Farquharson totaled 15 points in 32 minutes of action. UMA was led by Caitlin LaFountainwho collected 16 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks.

SMCC moves to the second spot in the conference table at 10-2, 15-6 overall; UMA drops to third having played one less conference game at 9-2, 15-3 overall.

With only four conference games remaining, the SeaWolves will travel to Hampshire College to take on the 2-8 Black Sheep Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.
