Lady Wolves Enter Postseason As #3 Seed

AUBURN, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was toppled 87-53 in its final Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) regular season game at Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Monday, Feb. 12.

Despite 22 points from first-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.), the SeaWolves were outmatched on the boards 48-30 to allow 15 second chance points and a season-high 87 in the contest.

Early foul trouble sidelined three SMCC starters in the first quarter, but the SeaWolves managed to keep it within striking distance. CMCC pulled away midway through the second to lead at the half 42-21. The Mustangs tacked on another 26 points in the third on 62.5 percent shooting. SMCC won the fourth quarter 20-19 but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.

The Mustang bigs, Brooke and Jordyn Reynolds combined for 36 points on high-percentage buckets (17-26) and together pulled down 18 rebounds. CMCC guard Alex Bessey tallied 17 points and added nine assists.

This loss sends SMCC to 12-4 in conference play to finish third in the standings. The SeaWolves will match up with #6 Vermont Technical College in the quarter-final round of the Elite 6 Tournament in Concord, N.H. on Thursday, Feb. 15. Game time TBA.

The Mustangs cap their second straight YSCC undefeated season at 16-0 and earn themselves a first-round bye to play the winner of #4 NHTI vs. #5 University of Maine at Machias.
