Lady Wolves Prevail In Home Opener 50-49

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (SMCC) — The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team squeezed by the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School 50-49 in a non-conference showdown in its home opener at the HUB on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The SeaWolves escaped the first quarter ahead 12-8 but went into the half trailing 25-22. SMCC turned in a 16-point third quarter—getting help from five in the scoresheet. Sophomore Priscilla Berdeja (Acapulco, Mexico) knocked down two three-pointers in the fourth—the second the game winner to break a 47-47 tie with 1:36 left in regulation. The Midshipmen made a lay-up with eight seconds remaining to bring it within one, but the SMCC defense would hang on to claim its third victory in as many games.

Junior Nyakuoth Mach (Des Moines, Iowa) led the home team in scoring with 17 points and cleaned up the glass on the other end good for 11 rebounds—her first double-double of the season. Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) and Berdeja also finished in double figure scoring. Sophomore captain Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) nabbed 12 rebounds and totaled six assists in 31 minutes from the point-guard position.

Navy Prep's Nyah Garrison led all scorers in the game with 20, doing much of her damage from the free-throw line going 11-14.
