Lady SeaWolves Keep Perfect, Defeat #6 Machias

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team defeated the Clippers from the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) 67-59 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) showdown at The HUB on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Entering the contest both teams ranked in the first United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches Poll, Machias #6 and SMCC #4.

The SeaWolves trailed 17-15 after the first but came storming back with a 21-point second quarter—limiting their opponent to seven. Both teams would trade quarters in the second half, but it was enough to keep the home team ahead by eight. SMCC forced the Clippers into 25 turnovers, this way capitalizing on 24 points.

Sophomore captain Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) finished with a season-high 14 rebounds and eight assists playing the entire 40 minutes. Junior Nyakuoth Mach totaled 20 points, sophomore Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) her third double-double, and senior captain Adrianna White (Lisbon, Maine) also in double-figures with 12 points. First-year Hanna St. Pierre (Jay, Maine) came off the bench to rattle in two three-pointers.

UMM's Caitlyn Lyons used an efficient 8-13 from the floor to lead all scorers in the game with 22—she was 3-6 from beyond the arc.

The result pushes SMCC to 8-0 overall, 4-0 YSCC; the Clippers slip to 6-1 overall, 3-1 in conference action.

Next up for the Lady Wolves is a trip to Concord, N.H. to take on the #15 USCAA-ranked NHTI Lynx in another conference tilt on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Tip-off is scheduled for at 6 p.m. WATCH.
