SeaWolves Slip Up Late, Fall To CMCC Comeback

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was defeated 62-55 by the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in part-two of the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) rivalry Wednesday, Feb. 6.

SMCC came out on a tear in the first quarter using 52.9 percent from the floor to score 22 against the opposition's 13. Sophomore captain Abigail Ramirez (Portland, Maine) threw in eight points in the first 10 minutes of play. CMCC chipped away at its deficit getting seven from Brooke Reynolds in the second quarter. The SeaWolves clung to a four-point lead at the break.

Junior captain Emily Hogan (Jay, Maine) dropped two threes in the third quarter, one from well beyond the arc, to help the SeaWolves maintain the advantage. It was all Central Maine in the fourth much to do with Alex Bessey's 11 points and 6-8 from the charity stripe. The Mustangs took their first lead of the evening on a made three at the 4:22 mark—part of a 17-0 run that would propel them to an eight-point advantage with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. SMCC lost its rhythm down the stretch, scoring eight in the final 10 minutes, to eventually fall by a seven-point spread.

Three finished in double figures for the SeaWolves led by sophomore captain Amanda Brett's (Portland, Maine) 15. Ramirez totaled a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds.

CMCC's Bessey led her team with 19 points and five assists.
