SeaWolves fall short in first round of USCAA Women's tournament

UNIONTOWN, Penn (SMCC) —The #8-seeded Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was defeated 67-62 by the host and #9 Nittany Lions of Penn State University Fayette in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament on Sunday, March 3.

SMCC was able to get only one three-pointer to fall of 19 attempts and deposit 29.6 percent from the floor. The SeaWolves held on to a two-point deficit going into the locker room at the break and dug a 12-point hole at the beginnings of the fourth quarter. SMCC came all the way back to cut it to one point with 2:30 remaining in regulation. The Lions ended the contest on a 5-1 run to punch their ticket to the next round.

Sophomore captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) led all scorers with 23 points in 38 minutes of action. Sophomore Lauryn Fagan (Standish, Maine) came off the bench to log a double-double at 19 points and 11 rebounds, and junior captain Adrianna White (Lisbon, Maine) flexed her muscles for 14 rebounds.

Four finished in double digits for the Lions powered by Kaitlyn Riley and Dae-lin Burnsworth, both dropping 16. Siteri Tale recorded a double-double with 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Fayette advances to match up with the #1-seed Villa Maria College in the quarterfinal round.

The Lady SeaWolves will play a consolation game tomorrow Monday, March 4 vs. a familiar Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) opponent and #10-seeded University of Maine at Machias. The contest will tip at 10 a.m.
