Women Win At Machias For First Time In Program History

MACHIAS, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team defeated the Clippers from the University of Maine at Machias 2-0 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match on Saturday, Oct. 13.

First-year Katelin Bennett (Freedom, Maine) created off the dribble from the right side and broke the stalemate with her first collegiate goal on a looping ball over the keeper's head at the 50:16 minute-mark.

It was sophomore captain Callie O'Brien (South Portland, Maine) who stuck two tackles in the offensive third to eventually connect for her 19th goal of the season to put the road team up by two scores with 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

The SMCC defense held on for its sixth shutout of the season to improve on a 0.74 goals-against-average. First-year Dana Sirois (Saco, Maine) was impressive to command the box and make seven saves in as many attempts.

Before the contest, the SeaWolves stood 1-13-1 all-time against the clippers—their only win on neutral ground in 2015. The victory improves SMCC to 9-1-0 overall, 5-1-0 in YSCC play; Machias 8-5-0 overall, 5-2-0 in league action.

The action continues when the Lady Wolves travel to Central Maine Community College, this time for a non-conference game, on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. LIVE STATS.
