Women’s Soccer Caps Season With National Tourney Appearance

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team was defeated in both pool play games of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division 2 National Tournament over the weekend—November 10-11.
At the championship banquet prior to play, sophomore captain Callie O'Brien (South Portland, Maine) and first-year defender Brenna Frye (Lebanon, Maine) were honored as USCAA First Team All-Americans—junior Sophia Zidow (Scarborough, Maine) and O'Brien also named USCAA Academic All-Americans.

SMCC kept it scoreless just more than 63 minutes of action until Clermont's Taylor Malucky connected for a shot well outside the 18-yard box to find the corner of the net. This one of 11 others to challenge SMCC first-year goalkeeper Dana Sirois (Saco, Maine), including a penalty kick early in the second half. The SeaWolves were subject to a defensive style of play, totaling just one shot.

A rugged affair from kickoff, the SeaWolf defense again recorded a first-half shutout. It was by way of a penalty kick in the 63rd minute that SUNY ESF converted the lone goal of the contest—Alyssa Hughes credited with the score. SMCC collected five shots on goal but were unfortunate to find the back of the net. On a back-to-back, Sirois turned in a solid performance with six saves.
It was only the second national tournament appearance in program history for the Lady SeaWolves who conclude their season at 12-4 overall, 6-1 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play.
University of Cincinnati- Clermont went on to win the national championship.
First-year Head Coach Ethan Wells reflected on the opportunity, "This a special experience for an exceptional group of women. A season of hard work paid off and with a roster of just 14, this team battled until the very last whistle. Despite some adversity, these women rose to the occasion and created a name for SMCC women's soccer. Now the goal is the get back to Virginia and make a run."
