
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered an 81-61 loss to the NCAA Div. 3 Beavers from the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) on Sunday, Dec. 1.
The Beavers put together a 26-point first quarter in which every starter contributed to the scoresheet. Making improvements on both ends, SMCC nearly matched UMF's production 19-18 in the second. The second half was decided by a 7-point margin in favor of the opposition.
Despite similar shooting percentages from the field, the Beavers were able to get to the free throw line 15 more times, the difference of 13 points.
First-year guard Taylor Renna (Pembroke, N.H.) came off the bench to lead the Seawolves with 18 points, her fifth double-digit scoring performance of the year. Rookie Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) and sophomore captain Halle Tripp (Searsmont, Maine) combined for 26 points; guard Abby Roy (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) dished six assists.
UMF's Jessica Dow and Jaydn Pingree each netted 13 and Sarah Poli ripped down 15 rebounds.
The result moves SMCC to 3-5 overall; UMF improves to 3-5.
Next, the Seawolves play host to the USCAA Div. 1 Knights from Berkeley College on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off at the HUB is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
