
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered a 69-54 loss to the hands of the USCAA Div. 1 Bengals from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The Bengals nearly doubled up on SMCC's point total in the first half; but with adjustments coming out of the locker room, the Seawolves won both the third and fourth quarters by 2-point margins. Carrying the momentum, the home team ran out of time to continue their comeback effort to move to 0-2.
First-year Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) poured in 24 points on eight made three-pointers; she pulled down nine rebounds, five on the offensive end. Sophomore captain Halle Tripp (Searsmont, Maine) netted eight points and first-year forward Jade Trueman (Sanbornville, N.H.) recorded 12 rebounds.
UMFK's Cece Bell came off the bench to lead her team with 20 points, to include nine rebounds and five assists. Karolyn Baptiste and Nysia Ortiz both reached double figures combining for 32 points.
Next, SMCC travels to Roxbury Community College (NJCAA) for more non-conference action on Thursday, Nov. 14.
