ACPHS Captures First Women's Soccer National Title
Virginia Beach, VA -- Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences captured their first ever USCAA National Title this afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, after defeating Southern Maine Community College in penalty kicks. The Panthers finished the tournament with a record of 3-0.
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Science entered the tournament as the sixth seed after posting an 3-1-2 conference record this season. They opened pool play with facing the number two seed, Paul Smith's College, which ended in a 4-2 win for the Panthers. Julia Roemer scored 3 goals and Ka'ena Kehano scored the other goal in the game. Shannon Donnelly registered an assist. The Panthers then went on to play Penn State Mont Alto, who they defeated 5-3. This game consisted of back to back goals between the Nittany Lions and the Panthers. The Panthers broke free from the tied ball game in the 62nd minute and never looked back to secure their ticket into the National Championship Game. Julia Roemer scored all five goals in that match.
The SeaWolves from Southern Maine Community College entered the tournament as the fourth seed, paved their way to the championship game by defeating the number one seed SUNY ESF and NHTI. They gave the Panthers a tough battle in the championship game. Ammelia Lunt put the SeaWolves on the board first with an assist from Mackenzie Farnham off a corner kick. It wasn't till the 60th minute when Shannon Donnelly put a ball into the box for Julia Roemer to put in the back of the net. The game remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and double overtime. The Panthers and SeaWolves headed into a shootout which resulted in Emma Russell scoring the game winning penalty kick.
