
UMA Moose Baseball Makes History with Game 2 Victory Over SMCC Seawolves
(Augusta, ME) After facing a tough defeat in Game 1 of their doubleheader against the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Seawolves on Sunday, September 22, the UMA Moose Baseball Team seized the opportunity to make history in Game 2, triumphing with a narrow 4-3 victory at Morton Field in Augusta.
The game began with an early strike from the Seawolves, as Brady Wintle delivered a key hit in the first inning, singling to score two runs and putting SMCC ahead 2-0. The Moose, however, were determined to bounce back and quickly turned the tide on the Seawolves.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Moose rallied to take the lead. Elias Murray stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch single that brought in three runs, catapulting the Moose ahead 3-2. This pivotal moment energized the team and the home crowd alike.
Continuing their offensive momentum, the Moose extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Nolan Leighton contributed with a crucial single, scoring an additional run to make it 4-2. This additional cushion proved vital as the Seawolves were eager to respond.
Elie Timler delivered a solid performance on the mound for the Moose, earning the win after surrendering five hits and three runs over seven innings. He struck out five batters and walked seven, demonstrating resilience and skill throughout the game. In contrast, Jack Morris took the loss for SMCC, pitching two innings and allowing three runs on three hits, while striking out two and walking one.
Murray was a standout performer for the Moose, finishing the game 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and showcasing his speed on the bases with three stolen bases. The Moose ran wild on the base paths, tallying a remarkable seven stolen bases in the game, which added to their aggressive offensive approach. The team also turned a double play, highlighting their defensive capabilities.
For the Seawolves, Wintle led with two runs batted in, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. SMCC displayed patience throughout the game, accumulating seven walks, with Zach Oliver and Connor Boulette each drawing two. They also executed two double plays, demonstrating their defensive prowess.
"This win means a lot for us after the tough loss in the first game," said head coach Bessey. "The team showed great resilience and determination, and I'm proud of how they fought back. This victory is a testament to our hard work and teamwork."
With this historic win, the UMA Moose Baseball Team not only salvaged a split in the doubleheader but also showcased their potential as a competitive force in the YSCC.
