RANDOLPH, Vt. – The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team recorded their fifth win of the season, 66-63, against the Knights of Vermont State University at Randolph on Saturday, Dec 14.
Seawolves co-captain Halle Tripp (Searsmont, Maine) and first-year Ashley Mullen (Oakland, Maine) would each score six points in the first quarter, helping SMCC secure a 1-point lead after 10 minutes of action. The Seawolves continued their offensive production in the second quarter building an 11-point advantage at the break.
The Knights slowly cut into their deficit, trailing by two points with a minute and half left in regulation. SMCC's tenacious defensive effort stalled any comeback effort by the home team, picking up its first conference win of the month.
Tripp led the Seawolves in scoring registering 14 points while shooting 50.0 percent from behind the three point line. Co-captain Hannah Thorsen (Kittery, Maine) came off the bench to score 11 points and log eight rebounds. First-year Abby Roy (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and Mullen would combine for 17 points.
The Knights' Yvonne Roberge topped all scorers with 25 points, adding eight assists. Marielle Benoit recorded a double-double at 24 points and 10 rebounds.
The win moves SMCC to 5-6 on the season, 3-3 in conference play. Vermont falls to 4-6, 1-4 in conference play.
The Seawolves return to action after the holiday break to host the Community College of Rhode Island in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Jan 4. Tip-off inside the HUB Athletics Building is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
