Baseball Takes Down NJCAA-Power UConn- Avery Point

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team came from behind on Saturday, Apr. 6 in a non-conference single to defeat the Pointers from UConn- Avery Point 5-3.

Sophomore captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) took the hill against the #10-ranked NJCAA Pointers and gave the home team a quality start allowing just one earned run and four hits, adding five strikeouts over 6.0 IP.

The SeaWolves offense was dormant through the first four innings trailing the Pointers 2-0 before sophomore captain Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) stepped up with a two-out single to score first-year Colby Gunter (Nashua, N.H.) to cut the deficit in half.

Senior Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, Maine) combined with first-year captain Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) for RBIs in the seventh to put the SeaWolves on top 3-2—short lived as the Pointers pushed across another to even the score in the eighth. The SMCC offense, proven resilient, once again came storming back in the bottom half to reclaim what was theirs, a two-run victory.

First-year Cole Lawrence (Pittston, Maine) came on in relief to pitch the seventh and eighth before first-year Derek Foss (Raymond, Maine) entered the ninth inning in a save situation. Lawrence was credited the win and UConn's John Domijan was hit with the loss.

Junior Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.) and sophomore captain Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) notched multi-hit games—Bryant's eighth of the season.

The SeaWolves improved to 18-5 overall; the Pointers fell to 7-10.
