McGaff Impressive In Baseball’s 6-4 Victory Over Great Bay

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team defeated the Herons from Great Bay Community College (GBCC) 6-4 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) single Friday, Apr. 19.

First-year Iain McGaff (Boston, Mass.) made his third start of his rookie season and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The hard-throwing righty surrender four runs but struck out 10 over eight innings to earn the victory.

The SeaWolves posted one run in the first frame as a result of an infield single by senior Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, Maine) to score junior Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.).

There was nothing going for either offense until the sixth inning when the Heron's evened the score with a base-knock through the right-side of the infield. Not to be outdone, SMCC reclaimed the lead on a Derek Foss (Raymond, Maine) RBI-single and came alive again in the seventh producing four more runs on three hits and a GBCC error.

The Herons pulled within two runs on a two-out bases-loaded double by Bryce Smith. SMCC first-year Cole Lawrence (Pittston, Maine) came on for one inning of relief to pick up the save and help the SeaWolves begin a new win streak. GBCC's Christian Dow was taxed the loss.

Foss collected the only multi-hit game for the home team; senior captain Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine) logged two RBIs—his team-leading 32nd and 33rd.

The SeaWolves improve to 23-7 overall and 4-1 in conference standings. The Herons sit 5-8 overall and winless at 0-4 in YSCC play.

The action continues when SMCC hosts Central Maine Community College for two singles on Tuesday, Apr. 23 and Wednesday, Apr. 24. Game times are 3:30 p.m. LIVE STATS.
