SeaWolves Dominate Central Maine, Finish Regular Season Champions

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team completed the season sweep of the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) in two-singles spanning Tuesday, Apr. 30 and Wednesday, May 1.

Game 1: W, 11-1 (5 innings) | BOX

Prior to the game, Head Coach Dave Walsh and SMCC Athletics honored four graduating seniors for their outstanding contributions to the program—Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.), captain Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine), captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine), and Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, Maine).

First-year Iain McGaff (Boston, Mass.) got the start on the hill, going the distance to allow just one earned run before punching out five.

Burpee and sophomore captain Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) both recorded multi-hit games for the home team—Burpee three RBIs and two runs.

Both offenses were slow to get started until CMCC pushed one across in the fourth by way of a Richard Thompson RBI-knock to right field. The SeaWolves responded with four in the bottom half of the inning and seven more in the fifth with one out to invoke the 10-run rule.

McGaff continues his undefeated rookie season at 3-0; CMCC's Damien St. Pierre was taxed the loss.

Game 2: W, 7-4 | BOX

Back from a shoulder injury, sophomore Noah Watson (Ayer, Mass.) made his second start of the season pitching three innings of one-run baseball. Watson struck out six before first-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.), first-year Alexander Schepis (Waterboro, Maine), and first-year Cole Lawrence (Pittston, Maine) made appearances out of the pen.

Burpee recorded another three hits and a RBI and Bryant compiled two knocks from the lead-off spot. First-year captain Peter Stauber (Cumberland, Maine) and first-year Junior Nunez (Boston, Mass.) added doubles in a 9-hit showing by the SMCC offense.

In a seesaw affair, Central Maine held a 4-3 advantage after five and a half innings of play. First-year Steven Ross (Quincy, Mass.) beat out an infield RBI single to spark a four-run rally by the men in blue in the sixth. The SeaWolves would reclaim a 7-4 lead and never look back.

SMCC's Schepis earned the win and Lawrence the save. For the Mustangs, Nick Powers suffered the loss.

The SeaWolves improve to 27-7 overall, and solidify their place as YSCC Regular Season Champions at 7-1 in conference action. The Mustangs finish their regular season 7-16 overall, 2-7 YSCC.

SMCC will play for its fourth conference title in as many years at The Ballpark this Saturday, May 4 in a single-elimination, four-game tournament. The #1-seeded SeaWolves will play the winner of the play-in game Great Bay Community College (#5) vs. Central Maine Community College (#4). First-pitch is estimated 3:00 p.m.
