SeaWolves Defeated In Consecutive Games At USCAA SCWS

DUBOIS, Penn.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team was defeated in consecutive games in double-elimination format at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series Monday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 14.

At the pre-tournament luncheon, sophomore captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) was announced a First Team USCAA All-American; first-year captain Peter Stuaber (Cumberland, Maine) was named a USCAA National Academic and Second Team All-American.

#3 Penn State DuBois: L, 7-1 | BOX

Francoeur, the nation's ERA king, took the hill in the prime-time opener against the reigning national champions and host school Penn State DuBois on Monday evening. Francoeur surrendered five runs in the first, the big blow a three-run shot to right field by the Lion's Clayton Butler.

DuBois used a 2-RBI triple delivered by Garrett Brown to extend its lead in the third inning to 7-0.

SMCC's only run came on a Junior Nunez (Boston, Mass.) homer to left center in the fifth inning, part of a six-hit day by the SeaWolves. The Lions collected eight hits but walked five times—the difference in run-scoring opportunities.

Francoeur was taxed the loss in his shortest outing of the season, allowing all seven runs on six hits over three complete innings. First-year Cole Lawrence (Pittson, Maine) came on in relief to pitch three scoreless.

The Lion's Brandon Orsich nearly went the distance throwing 6.1 innings of one-run baseball to be credited the win.

#10 Bluefield State College: L, 10-1 | BOX

The SeaWolves sent first-year Stefan Lesco (Somers, Conn.) to the mound in an elimination scenario against a Bluefield team coming off a walk-off defeat to Bryant and Stratton Albany the day previous. Bluefield got to work right away with a pair of RBI-singles in the first inning, before Nunez bounced one to the shortstop to drive in senior captain Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine) in the second to cut the SMCC deficit in half.

Bluefield opened it up in the later stages, scoring in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to go ahead by a nine-run margin.

Again, the SeaWolf offense was kept quiet with just three hits spread amongst the lineup. Lesco went 5.0 innings to allow five earned to suffer the loss. First-years Iain McGaff (Boston, Mass.) and Alexander Schepis (Waterboro, Maine) made relief appearances to combine for one hit and no earned runs.

Bluefield's Bayard Stevens pitched a complete game and recorded five strikeouts and just two walks to secure the win.

In a post-tournament interview, Head Coach Dave Walsh reflected, "Although it wasn't the showing we had hoped for, it was an honor and a privilege to be a part of this special tournament with an elite grouping of talent. We look forward to making our way back to the national stage in the future."

The SeaWolves conclude a successful season at 29-9 overall.
