Mustangs sink Seawolves in crucial YSCC matchup

South Portland, ME - After trailing 19-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs cranked up the defense in the second. CM held the Seawolves without a field goal in the second quarter, limiting them to just three made foul shots, capturing the lead for good. A halftime lead of 13 points, would be dwindled down to just a one possession game on multiple occasions throughout the third and forth quarters, but the Mustangs were never rattled, and pulled out the 70-61 victory.

First-year standout, Emily Strachan (Lewiston, ME) put on a show for the Mustangs. Strachan finished with 32 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks while shooting 65% from the floor. Eliza Brault (Ossipee, NH) came off the bench and tallied 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Despite only having two players score in double-figures, the Mustangs received contributions from everyone who went into the game. Leata Te Nana-Williams (Auckland, NZ) ripped down 7 rebounds, while Sarah Poli (Benton, ME) scored 6 and had 7 rebounds of her own. Ja'Naia Moran (Boynton Beach, FL) scored 7 points off the bench, and Jade Smedberg (Oxford, ME) came up with back-to-back steals in the third quarter resulting in fast break points for her and Strachan.

Hannah Richards led the Seawolves with 27 points.

With the win, CM snapped the Seawolves 10-game win streak, and improve to 23-3 on the year, and 12-2 in the Yankee Conference. The Mustangs also clinched the top seed in the Yankee Conference Tournament, scheduled to begin next weekend. This marks the 5th straight season that the Mustangs have won the YSCC Regular Season Championship, and the top seed in the conference tournament.
