Auburn, ME - Caleb Valliere threw a complete game and kept the Seawolves hitters at bay to lift the Mustangs to a 4-3 win over conference rival SMCC. It was the first time the Mustangs have beaten the Seawolves since 2016. Valliere finished the game with seven strikeouts.
After SMCC took the lead in the top of the eighth, the Mustangs clawed back to score two in the bottom half to retake the lead. Reid Cote drew a one out walk. Pete McCluskey then pinch ran for him. After Hayden Tremblay lined out to deep center, Max Dobkowski was hit by a pitch setting up first and Second with two outs. Will Bean hit a sinking line drive to right field that deflected off the right fielders glove allowing McCluskey to score of the tying run. Dobkowski later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.
Jimmy Reed and Cole Brown were repeat hitters for the Mustangs who improve to 10-4 overall on the season. Its the programs largest win total in the last seven years.
The Mustangs are home the rest of the week in NECBA action against UNE at 7:00 on Wednesday and UMass-Boston at noon on Saturday.
"I cant say enough about the game that Caleb gave us tonight" said Mustangs coach, Ryan Palmer. "We probably elevated his pitch count a little more then we would have liked. But it was his game to win. SM is a powerhouse in our conference who are very well coached. Coming away with a win tonight feels pretty good. I am happy for the boys. They deserve it."
