Men’s Basketball Wins Opening Round At USCAA National Tournament

UNIONTOWN, Penn.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team defeated the #9-seeded and reigning national champions from Penn State University Wilkes-Barre 70-68 in the opening round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Tournament on Sunday, Mar. 8.

Sophomore Anthony Lobor (Portland, Maine) dominated his matchups with 25 points on 9-12 shooting and 2-2 from long range. First-year Pedro Fonseca (Portland, Maine) scored 15, all by way of the three pointer, and added six assists. First-year Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) controlled the glass with 10 boards in 21 minutes of action.

Wilkes-Barre's Kevin Silverberg led all scorers in the game with 34 points and 6-8 from beyond the arc.

The SeaWolves lead by a slight margin 37-36 at the break. The see-saw affair continued until Lobor broke a 65-65 tie with an old-fashioned three-point play with less than a minute remaining. Lobor and Cousins both hit free-throws to push the lead to five, before Silverberg connected for a corner three before time expired.

Wilkes-Barre made 22-26 from the stripe, but SMCC converted on 40.6 percent from the floor—seven percentage points better than the opposition.
