HAVERHILL, Mass.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team suffered a 17-7 loss at Northern Essex Community College (NECC) in non-conference play on Tuesday, Apr. 30.

Both teams scored multiple runs in the first frame, however, it was NECC that pulled ahead in the second inning, scoring eight runs and taking a commanding lead.

NECC's Chris Bear was a perfect 3-3 from the plate with two RBIs, and Mark McKay also contributed to the team's victory with a three-run inside-the-park home run. On the pitching side, Harrison Cooley earned the win for the Knights, allowing five runs over three innings.

Despite the loss, SMCC's Liam Cooledge (Westbrook, Maine) went 3 for 3 with an RBI, while rookie Alex Bean (Westbrook, Maine) drove in four runs. SMCC starter Leudys Castillo (Estero, Fl.) took the loss.

The Seawolves finish their regular season at 26-12 overall.

SMCC will enter the Yankee Small College Conference playoff tournament as the #1 seed. The Seawolves will match up against the winner of NHTI vs. Quincy College (to be played on May 2) in the semifinal game on Saturday, May 4 at The Ballpark (Old Orchard Beach). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

A result would advance the Seawolves to the championship game at 5:00 p.m. to face the winner of York County Community College vs. Central Maine Community College.
