SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team dropped its season opener to the Wolverines from Bridgton Academy 8-7 in nine innings on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Graves Athletic Field.

First-year Jack Falvo (East Hartford, Conn.) made the start for the home team throwing two innings of one-hit baseball. SMCC featured six from the bullpen to go the distance to include Liam Jann (Philadelphia, Pa.), Emerson Tucholski (Westlake Ohio), Kalin Marum (Port Kembla, Australia), Liam Milne (Medfield, Mass.), Kyle Pucci (Sherborn, Mass.), and Anthony Sayers (Benoni, South Africa).

The SeaWolves' offense struck first with one in the opening frame and two more in the second before Bridgton posted four runs in third. The Wolverines held an 8-3 lead in the seventh until first-years Logan Burt (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Gabriel Rivera (Caguas, Puerto Rico) collected RBIs to bring the deficient to one run. Bridgton's bullpen was limiting in the final two innings to close out the victory.

Bridgton's Daniel Sarmiento was credited the win, SMCC's Jann was taxed the loss.

Head Coach Nic Lops commented, "Yesterday's game was a good battle against a quality opponent. I was proud of the way our guys competed until the final pitch. Offensively, we put on quality at-bats throughout the game. On the bump, we need to clean up the amount of free bases we gave our opponent."

The action continues when the SeaWolves play host to Quincy College on Saturday, Sept. 11. The twin bill begins at 1 p.m.
