Men’s Basketball Opens Season In Convincing Fashion

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team defeated the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School 84-50 in its regular season opener inside the Hutchinson Union Building on Saturday, Nov. 6.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead with a 12-0 run from the tip and sustained the advantage throughout the first half- scoring spread amongst the starters. The home team produced 45 second-half points, in which 10 players found the scoresheet.

SMCC converted on 10-24 attempts from beyond the arc and dominated the glass 52-29 to capture its first win over the Midshipmen since the 2016 season.

Sophomore captain Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) recorded a double-double logging 12 points and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes of work. Three others finished in double figures led by first-year Alexander Momo's (Worcester, Mass.) 17 points. Navy's Mike Woods topped all scorers in the game with 23 on 8-17 shooting.

Head Coach Matt Richards stated, "We have something brewing with this group, the chemistry we demonstrated tonight was fun to watch. I'm excited to move this momentum into three games this week and be battled tested amongst Yankee competition."

SMCC begins 1-0, Navy Prep 0-1.

The SeaWolves hit the road to face the Knights of Northern Essex Community College in non-conference play Thursday, Nov. 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Haverhill, Mass.
