SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team took both from the Community College of Rhode Island Knights in its home opener at Graves Athletics Field on Sunday, Mar. 27. SMCC improved on its 1-6 all-time record against CCRI and swept the opposition for the first time in program history.

Game 1: W, 16-7 [BOX]

Both teams exchanged 2-run innings in the first before the Knights delivered solo homers in the second and third to go ahead 4-2. SMCC used five hits to score seven in the bottom half of the third and tacked on another six runs in the sixth to run away with 9-run victory.

Four recorded multi-hit games for the SeaWolves—the lead-off hitter Justin Colon (Aguada, Puerto Rico) drove in four and scored twice himself. Three pitchers combined for seven innings, but it was first-year and middle reliever Emerson Tucholski (Westlake, Ohio) who recorded the win. Liam Jann (Philadelphia, Pa.) came on to pitch three no-hit innings to finish the game.

Game 2: W, 11-10 [BOX]

Another scoring frenzy in game two featured nine hits and 11 runs from the SeaWolves' offense. The Knights wiped away a 6-2 SMCC lead scoring five runs in the fifth. The home team responded with four of their own to regain the advantage and eventually hold off comeback attempt by CCRI.

First-years Joseph Townsend (Scarborough, Maine) and Michael O'Brien (Franklin, Mass.) combined for four hits and six RBI. Kalin Marum (Port Kembla, Australia) earned the start for the SeaWolves allowing just one hit and two runs over four innings.

Following the game, Head Coach Nic Lops commented, "Our bats came alive in a big way today to pick up two wins against a perennially talented CCRI squad. Our persistent approach at the plate led to timely hitting— our guys believe we are in every game. We hope to carry this momentum into another challenging test that awaits this weekend."

SMCC continues its perfect start to its spring slate and carries a 12-3 overall record dated from the fall. CCRI begins its season 0-2.

The SeaWolves return to action on Saturday, April 2 when they take on UConn-Avery Point in Groton, Conn. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
