MEN'S SOCCER DOMINATE VTSU LYNDON
Randolph Center, VT: The Vermont State University Randolph men's soccer team took on in-state rival VTSU Lyndon. VTSU Randolph found the back of the net 7 times as they outpowered the Hornets to win 7-3.
Josh Mather found the back of the net in the 20th minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The Knights kept the pressure on with an aggressive attack and forced a foul on VTSU Lyndon. Joey Reynolds was able to cash in on a penalty kick. Reynolds found the net once again just a short time after to give VTSU Randolph a 3-0 lead to go into the half. The Hornets fought hard in the second half scoring 3 goals in a row, but the Knights aggressive attack was too much and they added 4 goals of their own.
The Knights improve to 3-3 and they will host Cental Maine CC in a pivotal conference match on Homecoming Saturday.
Statements from Coach Rob Labate
What were your thoughts going into the game?
We knew going into the game that Lyndon had a few players we needed to watch, but our gameplan was to set the tone early and play VTSU Randolph soccer. When we can, we like to posses and attack only when the opportunity is there.
Going into half with a comfortable lead, what did you expect in the second half?
I know they are well coached. Coach Chris Gilmore is a very well known, knowledgable, and a seasoned veteran in New England. He's really a legend and I knew that if anyone can fire them up at halftime and point out another teams weaknesses, he could. We have to give them credit. Lyndon came out fired up and demanded respect from us. They possed the ball and made things happen offensively. They caught us on our heels a few times and capitalized. They showed class, grit and grinded out 3 goals including an impressive bicycle kick from 16 yards away. That could've been the turning point, but our guys pulled it together as a team and owned the time of possession for the last 20 minutes of the match.
What impressed you the most about the win tonight?
I was impressed again by 1st year player Joey Reynolds skills, composure in the offense 1/3, and his ability to create scoring chances. He and Colby Carrol play extremely well together and lead our offensive play. Colby plays with the fire, passion, and a heart that is unmatched and infectious.
We had some guys nursing some injuries and used every player on our bench today. It was a team effort and a team win for sure. We continue to get stronger as a unit and get better each day we are together.
