Women's Basketball wins season opener

Auburn, ME - Battling incredible foul trouble and cold shooting, the Mustangs found themselves in a back-and-forth contest with perennial USCAA-power, Villa Maria. With three starters in foul trouble, and on the bench for most of the first half, the Mustangs and Vikings were deadlocked at 22 at half time.

The Mustangs matched their first half total of 22 points, in the third quarter, leading 44-37 after three. However, a 9-0 Vikings run would give them an early forth quarter lead. Thankfully, it would be short lived. The Mustangs turned on the pressure, and pulled away for the 67-52 win.

Harata Coleman led the Mustangs with 14 points, while Sarah Poli added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Kali Thompson fought through foul trouble and cold shooting, but still managed to pull down 15 rebounds. Jade Smedberg was stellar off the bench, and really stepped up her game when her team needed it. Smedberg finished with 9 points and a game-high 17 rbeounds. Emily Strachan also stepped up her game late, and contributed a steady 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Danyea Barclay led the Vikings a triple-double of 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 blocks.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 1-0 on the year. They will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Portsmouth, NH to take on the Herons of Great Bay Community College in a Yankee Conference matchup.
