SB: Mustangs sweep NHTI in Concord

Concord, NH (CMCC) – The CM Softball team traveled to the Lynx of NHTI for doubleheader action Saturday afternoon on opening day of the fall 2021 season.

Game 1: Win, 8-5

The Mustangs started game one with first-year Avery Herrick (Dexter, ME) who pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 Earned run, 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. The Mustangs turned to Becca Ackerson (Whitefield, ME) in the 6th inning. Ackerson in two innings of relief gave up 1 hit, 1 earned run, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Herrick picked up her first collegiate win.

The Mustangs offence produced 11 hits in game 1 while being pacedby first-year Emily Wormwood (Bowdoinham, ME) with two hits. Olivia Gallon (S. Paris, ME) also had 2 steals, Olivia Scott (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), Avery HerrickMaddy Boynton (China, ME), Emily Sanfacon (Lebanon, ME), Haley Fernald (Bridgton, ME) and Erin Gosselin (Monmouth, ME) all contributed hits for CM.

Game 2: Win, 10-2

In game 2, the Mustangs turned to second-year Olivia Scott (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), to make the start. Scott pitched 4 innings allowing only 5 hits, 4 strikeouts while walking only 2 batters and allowing 1 earned run to cross the plate. The Mustangs turned to Makayla Gross (Farmington, ME) in the fifth inning. Gross in relief gave up 2 hits, 1 earned run, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Game 2 saw the Mustangs come out with a differnt look and feel against the Lynx. With Scott keeping NHTI off balance at the plate the Mustangs were able to get their bats going and pull away for the win. The Mustangs had 16 hits and were paced by Scott who helped her own cause with an in the park Home Run while game 2 catcher Emily Wormwood added a triple and 2 RBI's. Gallon adding 2 more steals, Boynton, Sanfacon, Maria Dostie (Lewiston, ME) and Gosselin all contributed hits for CM.

Scott picked up her first collegiate win.

After the game Head Coach, Bruce Robertson, commented, "This was a big way to start our fall season with couple wins for us. NHTI is very tough conference opponent. They have been on top of the YSCC for several years. Game 1 we came out flat in the first inning and made a few errors but Avery settled in nicely in the cirlce and we recovered to pick up the win. In Game two the bats came alive and we gave Olivia the run support she needed and once we took the lead we did not look back for the win."
