UNH Defeats Seawolves and NHTI to Win Tournament

South Portland - This afternoon SMCC hosted the NECA postseason softball tournament, featuring the SMCC Seawolves, the Lynx of NHTI and the UNH-club Wildcats. UNH beat the Seawolves, 3-1, in the opening game to advance and face the top seeded Lady Lynx of NHTI. In the championship game the Wildcats came away with the 2-0 shutout to claim the fall postseason title. 

In the UNH/SMCC matchup, Lady Wildcats pitcher Kate Steinmetz allowed only three hits while striking out six en route to a 3-1 victory. Seawolves second basemen Emily Turner (Lewiston, ME) scored the teams' lone run, going one for three at the plate on the afternoon. SMCC pitcher Charlotte Lewis(Chatham, NH) struck out five but gave up five hits and three runs. Leading the Wildcats offense was catcher Abby McDonough who went two for two, while third basemen Megan Gibbons and shortstop Kate Manis each contributed one hit and one run.

In the championship game UNH scored two quick runs in the first inning off a two RBI triple from Megan Gibbons, but from there the scoring ceased for both squads. Steinmetz ended with six strikeouts and five allowed hits in the shutout. NHTI pitcher Tori Lemay put forth a stellar performance striking out 13 of the 26 batters she faced, but NHTI just could not generate any offense, leaving six runners stranded on base.
