Week 2 YSCC AOTW and one student/athlete grabs USCAA honors

(YSCC) -- Week 2 of the Athlete of the Week awards and a YSCC student/athlete grabs a USCAA award

GOLF - Tyler Post of NHTI

Post has been named USCAA Men's Golfer of the Week. In a matchup of Yankee Small College Conference, NHTI defeated Southern Maine CC and University of Maine Augusta to win at the Val Halla Course. Sophomore Tyler Post was the top individual finisher at the event with a card score of nine over par.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - Callie O'Brien, Southern Maine CC (F., F - South Portland, Maine, 10)

O'Brien provided the firepower for the Lady SeaWolves in their two wins last week collecting four goals and an assist. The first-year forward recorded a hat trick in SMCC's 5-1 win over Central Maine CC. She now ranks second in the conference in both goals (6) and points (13).

MEN'S SOCCER - Haidar Al-Freihy, Me.-Machias (Senior, F - Gray, ME, 11)
In three games, Haidar had 4 Goals, 1 Assist 9 points, including one game-winning Goal. 4 goals on six shots on Goal.

Haidar graduated from Deering High School where he played soccer and had the opportunity to play and score at Nationals. He won MVP and scored 25 goals. His parents are Yusra and Nasfi Al-Freihy.

WOMEN'S X-COUNTRY - Carmen Bragg, University of Maine at Augusta, (Sr. , Runner - Washburn, ME )

Bragg and her team competed in the Bowdoin I Invitational alongside strong NCAA III competition including Bowdoin, Merrimack, Plymouth State, University of New England, Emmanuel, St. Joseph's (Maine), and Thomas. Bragg bested her time from the week before by over 2 minutes, finishing the 5K in 23:15. Carmen was first out of YSCC competition that included Central Maine Community College. This is Bragg's first year of collegiate cross country.

Carmen Bragg, daughter of Mark and Diana Bragg, enters her fourth and final season for the Lady Moose. During her junior campaign, Bragg started 25 games, was an academic all-American, and was named the national student-athlete of the year. In her sophomore year, she helped lead the Moose to a 23-10 record and was a key part of the team's National tournament bid. During her time at Washburn, she earned nine state championships (4 basketball, one cross country, three volleyball, and one soccer). She was selected to the Maine McDonald All-Star and Aroostook County All-Star teams and was MVP of the state tournament 2011 and 2013.

Academically, Bragg was part of national honor society (Vice President), salutatorian of class, and selected for the phi beta kappa award. She is a biology major here at UMA.

In her spare time, Bragg enjoys traveling, dancing, singing, crafting, sports, watching movies, and being with friends and family.

MEN'S X-COUNTRY - Joseph St. Cyr, Paul Smith's College (SR, - Methuen, MA)

Joe St. Cyr (SR) and team captain from Paul Smith's College won the 2017 Johnson State College Badger Invitational on Saturday, September 16th with a time of 28:27.8 over the challenging 8K course. One week prior, Joe placed third at the Castleton State University Invitational in 28:12. Joe set the Paul Smith's College Men's 8K XC record at the Cross Country Only Championships last season with a time of 26:48. Joe has been consistently among our top two runners for Paul Smith's College since his arrival as a freshman. Majoring in Fisheries Science, Joe is an avid flyfisherman and New York State fishing guide and operates Joe's Flies as a sideline. Joe is the runner-up in the 2017 US Snowshoe Nationals in the Half Marathon at Bend, OR, and placed third in 2016 in the half marathon in Odgen, UT.

SOFTBALL - Meranda Martin, Southern Maine CC (F., P/OF - Richmond, Maine, 8)

Martin tallied five hits in seven at-bats in the Lady SeaWolves split last week. She scored five runs, stole four bases, and pitched 5.2 innings of one-run softball (none earned).

BASEBALL - Josh Saurman, Great Bay C.C. (Fr, Pitcher - Portsmouth, NH, 17)

On Saturday, September 16, Josh Saurman, a freshman from Portsmouth, NH, threw a complete game shutout for the Herons against the CMCC Mustangs in the second game of a doubleheader. Josh finished the game allowing only five hits, one walk and hit a batter on 90 pitches giving Great Bay the 2-0 victory for the day. The following day, against NHTI, Josh hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 4th and turned a double play in the top of the 6th that would prove big keeping the game tied going into the 7th inning. The Great Bay Herons finished their five-game, three-day schedule strong ending the weekend 4-1, including the inaugural season's first win against NHTI on Friday, 6-4.
