Herrin Plays MVP Baseball, SeaWolves Capture Fall Championship

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team captured the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Fall Championship with wins over Central Maine Community College (CMCC) and NHTI, Concord's Community College on Saturday, Oct. 7.

First-year Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) made his third start of the season for the SeaWolves in a pivotal elimination game against a familiar opponent in CMCC; on the bump for the Mustangs was Damien St. Pierre.

CMCC got things going with a one-out double in the first that came around to score. The SeaWolves waited until the second inning to get even courtesy of a moonshot by junior Sean Adams (Lebanon, Maine) that knotted the game at 1-1.

Backed by a Justin Leeman (North Yarmouth, Maine) RBI-single in the fifth and another solo shot, this time by junior Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, Maine) in the sixth, Francoeur withstood another Mustang run in the seventh to capture his third victory of the season. St. Pierre would also go the distance but suffered the loss.

Coming off a masterful 13-k performance in his last start, junior Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine) picked up right where he left off against the two-seeded Lynx of NHTI. Herrin threw a complete seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits—the right-hander added 12 strikeouts to his conference-leading total (43).

SMCC provided all of its run support in the first inning pushing six across on RBI-singles by Chambers, Adams, and first-year Timothy Greenlaw (Windham, Maine).

Herrin's only blemish came in the fourth on an RBI-single by NHTI's Jacob Kelly. Herrin went on to retire nine of his next 10 batters to help his team to the win. Herrin now sports a team-leading 1.44 ERA and 15.48 K/9 spanning 25.0 innings pitched.

NHTI's Andrew Coulumbe suffered the loss.

Following the game was the awards presentation. SMCC's Caleb Chambers was awarded Most Outstanding Defensive Player; teammate Amos Herrin was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. NHTI's Cole Cruz was tabbed Most Outstanding Offensive Player.
