Timely Hitting, The Missing Piece As SeaWolves Fall Casualty To Knights

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team was defeated by the Knights from Northern Essex Community College 9-3 in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Apr. 10.

Coach Jordan Yanni gave the ball to first-year Devin Sawyer (Ayer, Mass.) who allowed eight hits and nine runs over 6.2 innings of work.

Sawyer threw three scoreless innings before the Knights turned the scoreboard over on two RBI-singles in the fourth. SMCC cut its deficit in half when the nine-hitter Cody Bryant (Somersworth, N.H.) drove in first-year Ian Westphal (Portland, Maine) on a liner to center in the bottom-half of the fifth.

Northern Essex gained its separation in the sixth and seventh innings pushing across a combined seven runs on seven hits. SMCC's Bryant made his first pitching performance of the season throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

The SeaWolves scored twice more in the ninth on run-scoring walks by sophomore Evan Leveroni (Sandown, N.H.) and junior Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine). Knights' relief pitcher Justin Kerhulas recorded the final out to secure starter Ryan Sharkey's win.

SMCC's Timothy Greenlaw (Windham, Maine) collected a game-high three hits on four plate appearances to improve on a .359 batting average.

SMCC, now 16-12 overall, will face Northern Essex in another nine-inning contest later this month on April 17 in Haverhill, Mass.

The SeaWolves begin conference play on Thursday, Apr. 12 when the Mustangs from Central Maine Community College come to town for a single nine-inning ballgame. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
