Trinidad Dazzles in SeaWolves Second Half Surge

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team marched to its eighth Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) victory of the season 88-64 over Unity College at The HUB on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The SeaWolves came out on a 15-2 run to start the game, but the Rams would chip away capped by a three-pointer by Den Suehiro as time expired in the first—SMCC still holding on to a five-point advantage.

The Rams closed it to a one-point deficit 34-33 on a made jumper by Hunter Engel early in the second before the home team pulled away again on a 13-2 run to gain some separation. The SeaWolves were fueled by first-year Gregory Trinidad (Lawrence, Mass.) who flushed seven from downtown in the second half, part of his eight threes in the game. SMCC didn't let down and went ahead by 24, its largest lead of the night, with 28 seconds left to go to complete the season sweep.

Trinidad set a new season-high with 26 points—leading all scorers in the game. The Pelham Connection Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) and Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) combined for 30 points—Silvestri with his eighth double-double of the season.

Ram's Suehiro led his team with 19 points; Engel finished with eight points and five assists.

SMCC remains in sole possession of third place in the conference standings at 8-3, 12-7 overall. Unity stands 3-7 YSCC, 5-9 overall.

The SeaWolves set out for Media, Pa. to play Williamson on Saturday, Jan. 20 as part of their non-conference schedule. SMCC will look to avenge its two-point loss to the Mechanics a season ago. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
