SMCC Locks Down Bucs 67-44 At The HUB

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team allowed the fewest points it has all season to take down the Buccaneers from Mass Bay Community College 67-44 in a non-conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The SeaWolves came out in a lockdown scheme, forcing the opposition into 11 turnovers and just 16 total points in the first half. SMCC put up 35 points in the second to continue separation and a 33-point margin. The home team capitalized with 17 points-off-turnovers and produced 35 points off the bench to reclaim the best points-against-average among all United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) programs (63.5).

10 players found their way into the scoresheet, led again by sophomore captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine)—12 points on 4-8 from three, five assists. Sophomore guard Colin Baker (East Hampton, Conn.) logged 11 points in 13 minutes of action and freshman center Cameren Cousins (Wells, Maine) finished with six points and seven rebounds, four to keep the offense alive.

Mass Bay was helped by Marshall Martin who went for 13 points, adding five rebounds and two blocks.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Matt Richards stated, "We just haven't been right at home as of late, but today we got back to who we are. We take pride in our tenaciousness on the defensive end, and when that's the common goal we will come away with the result. Today we remained disciplined from start to finish and saw exciting minutes from some of our bench players—now we must maintain going into the last stretch."

SMCC breaks the spell at home and improves to 5-4 at the HUB, 13-4 overall. The Bucs slip to .500 at 6-6 on the season.

The SeaWolves get back to their conference schedule with a trip to Unity College to take on the Rams Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip is set for 8 p.m.
